Likewise, developing automatic and fluid writing is the goal. When your child forms letters unconventionally or different each time, their written output will be impacted. A client of ours initially wrote every letter differently, one starting from the bottom then from the middle or backwards, which led to slow and choppy writing rather than smooth, automatic writing. If your child frequently struggles to create letters correctly or consistently, they might require additional support to improve their writing skills.

5. Avoidance of Writing Tasks
This is a BIG one. Children who need handwriting tutoring might actively avoid writing. They may express reluctance or frustration when asked to complete writing assignments, which could lead to them falling behind academically. This was a big red flag for my child as she would rip up or crumple papers to avoid writing, but would draw pictures beautifully.
6. Complaints of Hand Pain or Fatigue
If your child frequently complains of hand pain or fatigue during writing tasks, it may be a sign of an underlying handwriting issue. Discomfort while writing could results from excessive pencil pressure or an inefficient pencil grip, recruiting the wrong muscles for writing, a weak core for stability, etc... all requiring attention and intervention.
7. Difficulty with Fine and Visual Motor Skills
Handwriting involves intricate fine motor skills, such as precise finger movements and hand-eye coordination. Likewise, handwriting involved visual motor skills, such as placing the letters on the line appropriately. Children struggling with fine motor skills might find it challenging to manipulate a pen or pencil effectively, impacting their writing ability.
